Legislation

On 8 May 2014, the Italian Privacy Authority have made known a set of regulations to identify simplified methods for the policy and for the acquisition of consent for the use of cookies; this document was transposed into law by the State, Cookie Law, on 3 June 2014 (also see the Privacy Authority, no to profiling cookies without consent).

With this law, the website owner/administrator is obliged to acquire the informed prior consent of users for the installation of cookies used for purposes other than strictly technical.

What are cookies?

Cookies are text files containing minimum amounts of information sent to the browser and stored on the user’s computer, telephone or other device, every time that a website is visited. At each connection the cookies send information to the website of reference.

Cookies can be permanent (persistent cookies) if they remain on the computer until the user deletes them, or they can be temporary (session cookies) if they are deactivated when the browser is closed. Cookies can also be first-party cookies if set by the visited website, or third-party cookies if inserted by a website other than the one being visited.

For the purposes of law, the Privacy Authority identifies two types of cookie: “technical cookies” and “profiling cookies”.

Technical cookies
Technical cookies are the ones used for the sole purpose of “transmitting communication on an electronic communication network, or to the extent strictly necessary to the supplier of a service of the information company explicitly requested by the subscriber or user to provide this service” (see Art. 122, subsection 1, of the Privacy Code).
They are not used for further purposes and are normally installed directly by the owner or administrator of the website. They can be divided into navigation or session cookies, which guarantee normal navigation and use of a website (allowing, for example, purchases to be made or authentication for accessing reserved areas); any analytics cookies, assimilated into technical cookies (where directly used by the website administrator to collect information, in aggregate form, on the number of users and on the way in which they visit the website itself; functionality cookies that allow users to navigate according to a series of selected criteria (for example, language, products selected for purchasing) in order to improve the service provided to same. Prior consent of the user is not required for the installation of these cookies.

Profiling cookies
Profiling cookies are used to create user profiles and are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences shown by same when navigating on line. Due to the particularly invasive nature of these devices within the user’s privacy, European and Italian laws require the user to be suitably informed as to the use of same and to express their valid consent. This is referenced in Art. 122 OF THE Privacy Code, which states that “the storage of information in the terminal of a contractor or a user, or access to information already stored is permitted solely on the condition that the contractor or user has expressed their consent, after being informed with the simplified method as per Article 13, Privacy Code, subsection 3”.

Why we use cookies

We use cookies to improve the functionality of our website, to allow users to move easily among the pages and to remember their preferences and guarantee an excellent browsing experience.

Cookies used and their purpose

The cookies used on our website can be catalogued as follows:

Essential cookies
These cookies are essential to allow users to move within the website and to use the services required, such as access to protected areas of the website, for example.
Essential cookies are first-party cookies and can be permanent or temporary. Without these cookies, the user cannot access the requested services and our website will not operate correctly.

Performance cookies
Performance cookies collect information about the use of a website by users, such as the pages that receive the greatest number of hits, for example. These cookies do not store the identification data of individual visitors, but only aggregate data in anonymized format.

We use these cookies for statistical purposes, to understand how our website is used.

These cookies can be permanent or temporary, first or third party. Substantially, these cookies collect anonymous information on the pages visited.

Functionality cookies
These cookies allow the website to remember the choices of visitors (for example, user name, language or country of access) and to provide more tailored functions. Functionality cookies can also serve to provide the services required by the user, such as access to a video or entry of a comment to a blog. The information used by these cookies is anonymous and it is not possible to track user’s navigation on other sites.

We use these cookies to:

  • Remember if a specific service has already been provided to the user.
  • Improve the overall experience of the website by recording user preferences..

These cookies can be permanent or temporary, first or third party. Substantially, these cookies remember users’ individual choices to improve their navigation experience.

Google Analytics
Our website includes several components transmitted by Google Analytics, a web traffic analytics service provided by Google. These are third party cookies, collected and managed anonymously to monitor and improve the performance of the host site (performance cookies).

Google Analytics uses “cookies” to anonymously collect and analyse information on the way our website is used. This information is collected by Google Analytics, which processes it for the purpose of preparing reports for our operators about activity on the websites themselves. This website does not use (and does not allow third parties to use) Google analytics tools to monitor or collect personal identification information.

The Privacy Authority has specified that Google Analytics cookies can only be absorbed into technical cookies if used for the purposes of website optimization by the owner of the website itself, who can collect information in aggregate form on the number of users and the way in which they visit the website. To these conditions, for analytics cookies the same rules apply in terms of policy and consent as for technical cookies.

Therefore, we would like to point out that the Google Analytics management components on our website have been suitably altered to anonymize the IP addresses of users.

For more information, see the link below: Google’s use of data

The user can disable the action of Google Analytics selectively, installing the opt-out component provided by Google on their browser. To disable the action of Google Analytics, use one of the links below: Additional browser component to deactivate Google Analytics

Other third-party cookies
Visiting a website, it is possible to receive cookies both from this website (“proprietary”) and websites managed by others (“third parties”). One example comes from the presence of “social plugins” for Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, etc. These are parts of the page visited, directly generated by the aforementioned websites and incorporated into the page of the host site. The most common use of social plugins is to share content on social networks.

The presence of these plugins involves the transmission of cookies from and to the third-party websites. Management of the information collected by “third parties” is regulated by the relevant policy statements, which you are kindly asked to read. To guarantee more transparency and convenience, below is a list with the website addresses for the different policy statements and cookie management methods.
